That whole watershed is amazing. From Kusawa Lake, through to the Takhini and then into the Yukon River…does it really get any better? I tried my hand at moving water with my new kayak and realized that I am an angler first and a paddler second. I love fishing moving water. It just plain makes sense, fish sitting in the pools after runs picking off drifting bugs or fry. By looking carefully at a run of water you can tell where the fish will be holed up. Often it is easy with a nice wet fly swing.
Grayling are also the kind of fish that will take a number of different presentations and tend to be predictable. My recent trip to Takhini River resulted in some great catch and release fishing for Grayling. The river was crystal clear and a nice comfortable depth for fishing and paddling. We used a variety of flies including Klinkhammer’s on dry lines through to a variety of different nymphs. All caught fish. It was just one of those days. One of the guys in our group also was spin-casting and had luck initially on mepps and then with flies retrieved on a bobber. The Takhini is a special management water with single barbless hooks and flies. Check the regulations before you go.
