A friend, my kids and I headed out to Little Salmon Lake for some Morel Mushroom picking and Lake Trout fishing. I have driven this road just outside of Carmacks a few time but have never stopped at the lake.
The lake is long and skinny, running west to east for about 10 miles. We picked the most westerly campground, about an hour from Carmacks. With our campsite set up we jumped straight across the lake (which took 2 minutes by boat) and started hunting morels. It was slow going but we managed a bunch.
The fishing was quite easy. The lake was glassy and there was a defined drop off from about 6 feet to 17 feet on the south side of the lake. The wind gently drifted us along this drop-off and we let the kids cast len thompsons, jigs, spinners…you name it. The 2-3 pound lake trout were active and everywhere. We could even sight fish them.
It was a great day for hunting morels and catching fish.
