April 04, 2010 - A Nice Bow from Hidden Lakes

Ice fishing Hidden Lakes Yukon

Spent one day of the Easter Weekend at Hidden Lake #1. A beautiful, largely windless day.  We put in four holes.  Two tip-ups a way from us and two more holes close to the narrows.

I rigged up the tip-ups, one with a piece of shrimp another with power bait. The two rod set-ups were with a smalll jig and a very small chironomid type deal. They were both stationary with rod holders and bells. Ice fishing Hidden Lakes Yukon

We kept ourselves busy with shelter building, hot dogs and marshmallows, bows and arrows, kite-flying and whatever else four boys could figure out.

While enjoying the conversation among the adults, one of the bells and rods went ballistic.  It was possessed, ringing up down and side-ways.

Like a group of executives late for work, we sprang up and to the hole. I had 6 pound test on a small rod and knew it was stretched. I played the fish adjusting my drag a couple of times. Ice fishing Hidden Lakes Yukon

With the fish now in the hole I pulled it up, feeling every little bit of strain on that line.  As the fish head came out of the water I was on the upper limits of line strength. I felt it snap.

Its a good thing fish don’t swim backwards as I had enough time to throw my arm down the hole and scoop the nice bow up.  It was close to 4 pounds and just over 21 inches.  Nice fish.

Very nice fish Dennis!

I only went out ice fishing once this year…what a shame. Oh well,  kayak season is almost upon us.
