June 01, 2008 - A ‘Beautiful’ Hidden Lakes Report

Fishing Hidden Lakes Whitehorse

With all the recent excitement over the “Hooked on Yukon Fishing” fry release and the great advice on how to catch Rainbows from Glenn I needed to give it a try. The boys and I went back to Hidden Lakes #1 and parked ourselves on the lake shore.  We rigged up a powerbait set-up as per Glenn’s exact instructions and casted. I had with me two different jars of powerbait and I noticed that one definitely floated better than the other one. I tested the set-up in shallow water where I could see if we were getting the necessary presentation. I helped the boys cast and then we left the rod alone. There were already some willows in place as rod holders. The boys were surprisingly patient as the rod sat.  Within about 10 minutes the rod jumped, it was not a small tap, this was a full inhale. There was a fish on and it took off.  They boys jumping up and down wanted this fish in. I was using my son’s small rod so getting used to the drag and playing this fish was a little harder than expected. Fortunately no hook-ups and the fish came in nicely. We admired the fish, bonked it and then like a coroner, my son performed his autopsy.  He’s got a thing with staring and touching every part of the fish. At one point he stood up and said “that fish is beautiful”.  My oldest barely talks at the best of times, but he does choose his words carefully.  For him to refer to this fish as ‘beautiful’ meant that he understood the importance and respect that comes with this angling achievement.  Fortunately we caught the fish because my youngest wanted to go home.  It was a perfect day and possibly one of the most prolific parenting moments of my life.
