It has been a long time coming, but I am finally ready to start administrating the Yukon Fishing Forums online.
Call it…life, procrastination, intimidation and spam, or whatever, but something has kept me from writing in general and administrating this new forum function.
I think there is great potential for like-minded Yukon anglers like yourselves to participate and share what you know about Yukon and Southeast Alaska fishing.
I know from the emails, pictures and encounters on the street that there are many of you who fish a great deal more that I. I hope we can harness that energy and have some meaningful two-way communication.
Try it out and share something on the forums.
At the moment it is broken down in a variety of different categories: Location Reports, Yukon Fly Fishing, Family Fishing, Ice Fishing, Events, News, etc.. I am open to any suggestions you may have.
I hope you enjoy and participate in the Yukon Fishing Forums.
Everything was about two weeks later this year. The ice just kept hanging on. With that the family anticipation built for the annual first soft-water fish of the season at Hidden Lakes.

The traditional powerbait, treble hook set-up was the method of choice. For a more detailed description of this set-up have a look at my previous post “If I were a Rainbow Trout”. The approach, quickly rig up two powerbait rods (one for each kid), cast them into productive water (away from the underwater forest) and start roasting weenies.
It wasn’t long before a nice, little rainbow took the bait. Now it was small…don’t let me kid you. The regs say 8 inches, this was 8.5-9 inches. Given it was the first of the season and it swallowed the hook hard, we took it and brought it home for the frying pan.
All in all a stellar day.
Took the family fishing this past weekend. Realistically with all the kids wanting in the boat, it was more boating with some lines in the water.
I took advantage of every minute searching for and site-fishing for Pike. It was crazy hot and the Pike were suspended and sun-bathing in the weedbeds.
With my eight weight and some new dry line I was able to cast out some chunky, home-tied flies (red and white) in front of them. With some subtle pulses and twiches I caught a couple of nice ones including a legal 28 inch six pounder fit for dinner.
Knew it was going to be a work out, appropriately equipped/dressed for the possibilites. Paddled past Bonneyville Creek till the wind/whitecaps too
strong to paddle against anymore. Fishing was only so-so at best (several lakers in the 1 -2 kg range) mostly because the wind was howling - top of
the 2’chop was being blown away - the OK Trident 15 was the only boat on the lake. Biggest problem with the fishing was trolling was impossible - too
slow against the wind, too fast with. Drifted broadside in the worst of it as a Trident science experiment and found its stability to be remarkable, no
problems. Popped the sail for the return and made it all the way back to the narrows in less than 20 minutes, wow. Big fun. Will be back to fly fish for
grayling this week - if it’s calm… Bowrider said he’s going to teach me to roll cast a weighted size 2/0 Clouser 75’....
Lake trout report.
get out there and get them while the action is still HOT.
Fishing from the Kayak this past weekend Heather caught (and released) 9
nice 1.5-2lb lake trout from Little Fox Lake. She was using light line and a
#2 vibrax spinner - fish the shallows - the trout there were eating caddis
off the bottom. We found a very productive “saddle” and had a blast!
Fish Lake report
I can no longer call it NO Fish Lake as my dry spell on this beautiful but
cruel lake has ended. Again the trout are shallow 2-7 feet suspended in
10-18 feet of water.
Trolling from the Yak.
Thanks to Doug K. I have started trolling to my fishing spots and have been
picking up some great accidental fish by doing so. Why just paddle when you
can fish?
all for now
