August 18, 2006 at 8:15 am

If you have been following the posts regarding the TD Canada Trust Great Canadian Shore-line Clean up (see Deadly Fishing Line, Clean-up , and Agonizing Tangle) you will know that Pumphouse Lake was registed as a designated clean-up.

This Sept 16th at 10AM volunteer a few hours of your time and help me Clean-up Pumphouse Lake. In order to register as a volunteer go to http://www.vanaqua.org/cleanup/register.php and select Yukon, Whitehorse and then Pumphouse Lake as the site. This will provide you with information on the clean-up and provide a contact for any additional logistical information. I plan on having my toddlers there as well helping, so don’t hesistate to bring any mini-conservationists.

I am also working on getting some corporate and media sponsors to provide coffee and snacks, a truck for hauling garbage, and draw prizes for volunteers. If you want to sponsor let me know.

The Great Canadian Shore Line Clean-up Initiative is part of the International Coastline Clean-up initiative.

The TD Canada Trust Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup objectives are:

Education and Awareness - The TD Canada Trust Great Canadian Shoreline cleanup is designed to raise awareness and change attitudes about shoreline litter and aquatic debris. In addition, valuable data is collected during the cleanup. This is used to change legislation and design programs.

Community Stewardship – In September of 2005, the TD Canada Trust Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup removed debris from 813 sites across Canada. The cleanup attracts a diverse group of participants ranging in age and background. Many of these groups clean up the same shoreline each September and demonstrate a sense of stewardship for these sites.

Environmental Monitoring and Restoration – Removal of debris from sensitive aquatic habitats helps to restore the environment. By changing attitudes about litter, these habitats will be protected and preserved from future debris related damage. (from their website)
