The One Fly Pike

August 31, 2006 at 10:18 am

I have been quite obsessed with catching Pike on the fly (see Topwater Adrenaline) as of late. The fun thing about tying your own Pike flies is that they can be really chunky, clunky and ugly. I find that zonker strips go a long way with Pike and I tend to add them to everything. I have also written in the past about needing to tie durable Pike flies.

This is why:

An “after using it once and catching a big, nasty Pike”:

Need I say more?

Here is a sampling of another Pike predator pattern that I have tied.

Just for fun, another “Larger than Life” fly:

For those interested in setting up a fly tying club over the winter, send me an email and I’ll put one together. I am thinking a get together once a month with a specific fly pattern.

Hey Dennis - Nice flies. I agree - tying streamers for pike is a hoot; big, loud and ugly!! And Ive been doing the same with using zonker strips (and dumbell eyes) as the foundation for just about all flies I tie for pike. About the only other things I add to that are some bright bucktail and krystal flash for a wing. Whats up with that funky hook in the last pic?

cheers,

Bruce

The last one, I must have been drinking. Do you like the halibut hook? The reason I tied that ugly thing is to completely go over the top and create something so tacky it would be comical. That fly was the second one that was themed to support the governments new Yukon:Larger than Life brand. I gave to my fishing buddy Derek for his birthday. He even has it on display in his office.
