How to and Where to Catch Lake Trout on Quiet Lake? (Question from Jake)

September 06, 2006 at 7:00 am

Hello, I just had a quick question. I have been fishing Quiet lake for years and have caught some amazing grayling there. I have always been skunked fishing for lake trout though! I was wondering if you had ever fished the lake and if you know of any good lake trout haunts?

If you have any info on that or know of anyone who would could you let me

know?

Thank you,

cheers,

Jake

Dennis here…I have tried digging a bit for this information but with little luck. Personally, I have not spent much time on the south Canol other than fishing on Sydney Lake. Interestingly enough, we were trying for Lakers and kept getting into Pike. Any help would be appreciated, I know there are plenty of Yukoners that head up that way religiously…

I just pulled out the depth charts for the lake and was surprised to see maximum depth sounded of 170m. This is deep. To compare, even Bennett only has a maximum depth of 123m. Not having fished there myself, and only going by the map, it looks like a very steep lake. It also looks like a serious downrigger lake to me. I find that my style is with a standard lure unaided (no additional weight or downriggers) trolled slow on my 30Hp only gets to about 20-30ft deep. I tend to get into small lakers this way, but usually only in the spring and fall as it brings them to shallower waters.  I was hearing that people were catching fish all summer on some of the bigger lakes at around 80 feet. You could get to this depth with some patience and a deep six or additional weight. Maybe someone else who has more experience with thsi lake, downriggers and/or fishing these depths can make some suggestions. Not sure if this helps?

paddle the drop off area of the shore from the upper put-in to the river mouth. In the spring, for sure, there are lots of lake trout to catch without downriggers. there are also lakers at the top of the lake prior to the river to Sandy.

The lake drops in depth very quickly from the shore…not too far down you will catch lake trout. Ruby Eye Blue bellies work well.

have fun

Hi Slimpig:

Thanks for the information. It is anglers like you who are not shy to share information that make it more enjoyable for the rest of us. Curious about the Ruby Eye Blue Bellies? I am guessing it is one of the Gibbs line of products in a blue colour.

Thanks again and keep contributing. Jake, I hope this helps! When you catch one send me the pic and the story and Ill post it.

Ya…Gibbs ( I guess ) Ruby Eye Blue Bellies we call em…but hell, all you really need in the Yukon are Pixies…the rest is just so your tackle box looks fancy.

maybe use a 1 oz weight with them….paddle up from the top put in (now looking like a damn campground :( ) You need to get up past that area though…half way to the river. Lots of trout there…low and slow.

have fun

I fish Quiet lake every year and i find it one of the better lakes on the canal for trout i fish in about 55 feet just on the shelf and i use husky jerk with a willow leaf and a pencil weight (2oz) in the middle as a bumper with a led-core line and and set it about 35 feet down i catch lots of nice 10/25 pound lakers
