I have been off the water for a while. Colds, kids and weather kept me out for about two weeks. Eager to hit the water I recruited a friend for a late Sunday night fish on Fish Lake.
We took off at around 7pm and launched the 21 foot 140 HP boat into the calm, warm water. What a treat to cover so much water so quickly with the big motor. I am used to gunning it full throttle with my 30 HP, taking five times as long and freezing by the time I get to the other end of the lake. We made it to the south end in about 10 minutes. The plan was to try the dry fly for Grayling. The problem was…we tried a little trolling first and got into Lake Trout right away. The fishing was great with us hooking into five fish within the first two hours. All the fish were caught in about 30 feet of water and between 2 and 5 pounds.
This time of year I should be getting into deeper water to start catching bigger fish, but I won’t complain. The odd thing was that the only hook that was producing was the Len Thomson No.1 Five of diamonds red. This lure is part of a Canadian fishing tradition, since 1929. It is also one of the most trusted and true lures that can catch virtually any species of fish in the Yukon.
The high alpine lake was beautiful, surrounded by the setting sun screening across the mountains for hours. We even spotted a southern lakes Caribou Bull grazing comfortably along the hillside.
Hi Fishing Man - thanks for posting your fishing photos of Fish Lake. My son Jeff is there in the Yukon for his first time and he satelitte telephoned us to tell us he is at Fish Lake - now I can see that beautiful part of this country. thanks Kim from Dunster, BC
