This past Sunday the Yukon Fish and Game Association, Environment, Yukon Energy and a group of corporate sponsors, Sports North, Up North Adventures, Arctic Star Printing and Icy Waters hosted the first Free Family Fishing Weekend and Kick-off to National Fishing Week event. It was wet, seeming to rain steady throughout the event, but morale was high with many families and children getting out to fish for the first time.
It was great to see people enjoy the events at the Fish Ladder with a Fish Filleting demo, fly-tying, boats, educational materials, and many give-aways. Immediately after that the next venue at Hidden Lakes featured hot dogs, cake, and fishing! KIds, families went to Hidden Lakes to learn how to fish the powerbait method for Rainbow. The conditions were not the greatest but in the end everyone learned how to catch those feisty stocked Yukon Rainbow. Approximately 70 people attended the events and everyone took home at least a new fishing story and a fishing lure.
Hopefully kids and parents will use this new knowledge to hit local lakes and get out fishing. I’ve included a link to more photos of the event.
Glad the kids got involved in fishing - looks like a great time!
